Necessary because it brings hope of opportunities to act or better still the chance of being paid to perform.  Earning money doing something you love is a wonderful thing.

Evil because it entails the stress of being judged and the pressure of performing well (inside a small window of opportunity) when in fact the one thing that makes it hard to excel is that you care about the outcome so much.
