Self Test Audition Workshop

A CHANCE FOR YOU TO EXCEL

CASTING DIRECTOR DAVE NEWMAN says, "We need to ask ourselves, when looking at an audition, could I watch another 9 hours of this character?"

The challenge for actors in this next audition workshop is to NOT fall into the "SORRY, HATE, ANGER" trap that Dave Newman believes often restricts actors.  The goal is to create complex, likeable characters that deliver the story's drama.  Dave has received thousands of self test auditions.  His expert advice will help you embrace the opportunity to take control of your self test audition.

You can test out your choices in a pre-recorded SELF TEST and THEN get feedback in this session from Casting Director Dave Newman (Australia Day, The Family Law, The Inbetweeners) about other options.  Dave will then direct you live in this online session.

Actors also get feedback from TV Director RICHARD SARELL (View his CV HERE).

An acting challenge that will expand your understanding and your skill.

THIS IS THE WAY THE WORKSHOP RUNS:-

  1. Submit your self test prior to the session.
  2. Then view it with Casting Director DAVE NEWMAN and get his feedback during your session.
  3. NEXT you get direction from DAVE NEWMAN about the changes he would suggest and you immediately implement those options LIVE to demonstrate your audition skills.  (You can record your performance to review it.)
  4. You also get ONE-ON-ONE TIME with director and acting coach Richard Sarell. Get practical acting tips on how to implement change to avoid falling into the common traps.  (A perfect opportunity to sample the power of The Rehearsal Room acting process.)
  5. At the end of the session participate in a general discussion about the audition process in this post Covid-19 world.

DISCOVER KEY INGREDIENTS OF THE REHEARSAL ROOM APPROACH  ...

A university trained actor recently recorded a self test using The Rehearsal Room techniques for the first time.  Immediately there was a shift in his performance.  He sent the best take off to his agent and got an immediate response. "THAT'S THE BEST SELF TAPE I'VE SEEN YOU DO!"  -  It's a tested process that delivers.

AN AUDITION WORKSHOP WITH A DIFFERENCE

In our previous Audition Workshop in August 68% of participating actors created unlikeable characters in their self test.  Casting directors say this exceptionally high outcome is a very common occurrence.  This indicates the core processes those actors used led them to an unproductive result meaning they have wasted their first run of the scene.

This workshop provides the opportunity to break those patterns that hold you back from attracting attention with your auditions.

What you will get from this course?

    1) Do's and don'ts for self tests

Acquire an understanding of the obvious traps

    2) Get great tips on general casting issues

During the briefing session at the end of the workshop you will get practical hands-on advice from Casting Director Dave Newman.

    3) The opportunity to ask questions

You will be able to ask questions in the briefing session about the personal areas of confusion or concerns you have.

    4) Get specific analysis of your acting technique

In your one-on-one time with television director Richard Sarell you will get direct honest feedback about your acting technique and your audition technique.  Sometimes your acting techniques are great but your audition technique doesn't display your strengths.  Richard will assist you with clear and practical advice.

    5) Make progress at being less nervous in auditions

Nerves can have a big impact on the outcome of an audition.  Doing an audition should be an ordinary experience rather than an exceptional one.  That is a skill that needs to be acquired and practiced.

Scenes are supplied by the Casting Director DAVE NEWMAN. for these workshops.  The choice of which one you wish to work on is yours. YOU WILL HAVE THREE DAYS TO SUBMIT YOUR SELF TEST.  A reader will be available on Saturday morning 21 November to work with you on the live component of this workshop.  That's when you get to re-work the scene under DAVE NEWMAN'S direction.

    One-on-one Coaching

Coaching Sessions with Richard are $60 for 1 hour (Covid-19 price) but are only $45 (Covid-19 price) for actors who have trained for a term at The Rehearsal Room.

Ring 0407 226 620 or email contact@rehearsalroom.com to book. It is best that you record your self test independently and then come for coaching to prepare for responding to Dave's direction.

I’ve really rediscovered my passion for screen acting. I used to leave screen classes feeling deflated and unsure of myself but when I leave The Rehearsal Room, I feel inspired to keep working harder. Truly, thank you.

For an actor a scene must do more than further the plot - it must explore the relationship between characters. Richard has a gift for making this process clear and simple. His direction gives me confidence to trust my own intuition, thus allowing the character room to breathe...

    ABOUT RICHARD...

Over his twenty-five year directing career Richard found that many actors he auditioned didn’t actually listen in auditions.  And he realised this was sometimes due to lack of understanding and sometimes to do with nerves.  That was why he devised a workshop that would help actor's acquire skills to defeat the audition stresses.

THE AIM of these sessions was to enable actors TO BE CREATIVELY FREE in an audition not restricted by fear.

    REVEALING THE MYTHS
Having a practical understanding of what the actor's job is when auditioning is a massive help in enabling an actor to audition well.  These workshops aim to quickly build an actor's understanding of the audition process - which usually takes actors years of professional experience to acquire. There are many myths about auditions and many confusions about what Casting Directors and directors are looking for.

    LEADING THE WAY
Richard was one of the first acting teachers to begin running workshops that allowed actors to interact with Casting Directors.  The aim was to give actors experience of the audition room so that they can approach an audition in a relaxed, focused and professional way.

These are the only workshops where actors also receive analysis and feedback from a director as well as a casting director.  This combined input from two different entertainment professionals makes these workshops unique and incredibly valuable.
