HOW TO DELIVER STORY

"The Origin of the Confusion"

The STORY is what the playwright writes.

And the actor is the director’s main tool for delivering that STORY.

THE STORY is the entire focus of the production exercise yet acting teachers as a collective group spend very little time dealing with it.  Rather than being specific some of them lean on evocative but incredibly vague metaphors.  Others ignore STORY completely.

STANISLAVSKI started the journey.  But his prototype model isn’t very clear about how to deal with STORY (read the blog).
Metaphor: “A certain pilot was asked how he could ever remember, over a long stretch, all the minute details of a coast with its turns, shallows and reefs.  He replied: “I am not concerned with them; I stick to the channel.”
Constantin Stanislavski

Lee Strasberg LEE STRASBERG perceived the actors energies needed to be focused elsewhere … so he didn’t deal with STORY.  Not even a metaphor (read the blog).

STELLA ADLER was concerned that actors were becoming too internally focused as a result of LEE STRASBERG’s interpretation of STANISLAVSKI’s theories.  She was strongly committed to the concept that theatre is about ideas.  And surely it is a plays STORY that explores those ideas.  But, despite this ardent interest, nowhere in her book “The Art of Acting” does she explain how to deal with it. (read the blog) Stella Adler

Sanford Meisner

SANFORD MEISNER was fascinated by truthful acting and explored processes that came from instinctive impulses.  He ignored STORY completely.  It’s impossible to decipher what is the focus of his metaphor (read the blog).

Metaphor:  “The text is like a canoe, and the river on which it sits is the emotion.  The text floats on the river.”

So, if you are looking for techniques that will help you understand your role in the STORY … then the BIG names in the history of acting teaching DON’T have the answers.
